Our now twenty four Climate Hubs have developed from just two who set out in 2021 to build on the success of the Climate Challenge Fund by widening its reach, encouraging learning and improving networking.
After consultation with community groups and agencies, the Scottish Government set the aim of the Hubs as to support communities to take climate action through support, capacity building and collaboration. They invited organisations to submit proposals outlining how a Climate Hub could work in their local area.
The Early Days
In the summer of 2021, Thurso Community Development Trust and Aberdeen Climate Action were selected to create the first Climate Hubs – developing the North Highlands & Islands Climate Hub and NESCAN Hub. These two hubs started from different organisations, with different local needs and different actions. However they were both incredibly successful in bringing local people together and inspiring climate action because they were rooted within their local community. A marker of this success was in 2022 when the North Highlands & Islands Climate Hub were requested to increase their geographical coverage to all of Highland Local Authority, and became the Highlands & Islands Climate Hub.
Forming a national Network
Since then, the network has grown nationally to include twenty four Climate Hubs, each led by local experts and connected to community organisations and cross-sector partnerships. This brings us to the current day, where every community in Scotland is covered by a Climate Hub who can support them on their climate action journey.

Reaching full national coverage is a huge milestone in Scotland’s just transition to net zero. Everyday our communities feel the impacts of climate change, and that’s why it’s important they are listened to in climate policy and supported to take action to mitigate the impact and adapt to new ways of living.
